Simeon Horace Pickering was born in Salt Lake City October 18, 1894, and died there July 6, 1987. In between that time he was a painter, illustrator, and a historical guide at the Statue of Liberty in New York. Simeon served in the 145 Utah Field artillery and in the Navy during World War I where he was left disabled. He graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, and then married Alys Brown of Oak Park in 1922. They moved to New York City where Simeon did post graduate study at the Society of Illustrators. It was there in New York he was active as a portrait artist, and did portraits of famous folks such the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Al Smith, 4 time governor of New York and Presidential Candidate of 1928.
