McDonnell had a passion for the varied landscapes of Arizona, her childhood home. When she returned to Arizona after having lived abroad for more than two decades, she seems to have found a real sense of tranquility and color in the deserts, gardens, and mountains of her home state. This piece is a fine mid 1960s example of her abstract expressionism, and she uses her palette of bright vibrant color and odd shapes to evoke the mood and feel of the southwest.
