Norman Roland Eppink, American, 1906-1985

Norman Roland Eppink was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 29, 1906, to Herman and Catherine Koch Eppink. He graduated from the Cleveland Art Institute and Western Reserve University (Ohio), and taught in Cleveland and Lakewood, Colorado. He taught at Emporia State University from 1939-1975, becoming head of the Art Department in 1947. Norman was the Emporia Gazette’s “Man of the Week” twice, on June 1, 1957 and October 21, 1967. The latter honor was due to the issuing of 101 Prints, a limited edition book illustrating the graphics media found in major exhibitions or collections and including explanatory text. He had worked for five years researching and creating the book by hand; however, his original idea had existed in notes for 28 years. “Eppink: Retrospective,” an exhibit displaying more than 60 years of his artwork, was held on campus in April, 1972. Norman was a member of the Rotary Club and also served as a member of the Kansas Cultural Arts Commission. In 1981 the Norman R. Eppink Art Gallery was established in King Hall on the Emporia State University campus. Norman R. Eppink died June 14, 1985.
