Thurman was a student of her uncle Edwin Evans, as well as being related to another one of her teachers, J.T. Harwood.
“Matilda Ann Evans Thurman from Lehi, Provo, and Salt Lake City, Utah, began teaching in Salt Lake's junior high school system in 1926. Thurman exhibited in a number of shows through the years, especially Associated Utah Artist exhibitions. She was an oil painter and watercolorist (transparent medium), and specialized in regional realist landscape themes.”
